Handcrafted Eco-Friendly Font Puzzles For Typophiles Hand Made in Italy.

above image is cropped

Fan of fonts? These beautifully designed and crafted painted plywood puzzles from Looodus are laser cut and hand-finished in the hills of Trivero in Piemonte, approximately two hour’s drive from Milan, Italy.

The puzzles are a true collaboration between designer and artisan, exploring the possibilities of computer aided design and hand finished products. A marriage of new technologies and pride in a craft handed down from father to son. Each puzzle goes through numerous checks to ensure a product which is precise and modern while being unmistakably artisanal.

Extreme care has been taken by Looodus to use a manufacturer who shares their values with attention to craft and quality while ensuring that the product is as environmentally friendly as possible. The process begins with the selection of wood used to create this beautiful piece. All the plywood is FSC (Forestal Stewardship Council) certified Poplar from the surrounding Padana Plane. This is where the majority of Poplar is grown for Italian paper and the carpentry sectors.

The concept for the Puzzle, like many of Looodus’ products, is born from observing the designer's baby daughter and her real life experience of being a first time parent. The Fonts were selected to be appropriate for their shape and size but also have a special place in the world of design. The colours have been checked and tested to offer a harmonious range across Green, Blue and Red.

“There are opportunities which arise every day to be creative and make quick fun toys for her, using the most rudimentary materials and sometimes these mini prototypes can become more refined products,” explains Kurt Stapelfeldt, Co-founder and Looodus Chief Designer.

Packaging Geography. Laser Carved Topographic State Magnets Are Beautifully Presented In Unique Package Design.

Mette Hornung Rankin of the Bureau of Betterment and Greg Jones of Fifty-Four Forty have collaborated on this set of laser cut topographic US State magnets and the prototype packaging for them. Set inside chipboard whose printed design mimics the surrounding area (and doubles as a display stand), each magnet-backed state carving is accompanied by a small folded two-sided pamphlet with facts and engravings.

Mette tells us of the inspiration and process behind this project and the prototype packaging:

"My dad was a geography teacher, so growing up in a small town in Central Oregon my family participated in the local radio station’s morning Geo Quiz with the 3 other families in town who were also partial to such shenanigans. Over the years of answering questions correctly I collected a world placemat, spin-top globe pencil, globe keychain, and numerous stickers and erasures.

While the days of the Madras Radio Geo Bee are long gone, I still have a fondness for geography related trivia. So when I met Greg Jones at an ADX Feedback Loop event where he presented an idea for a topographic series of state products, I was psyched to help him make it a reality.

After some talk, we decided to collaborate on packaging prototypes for a small batch of products he wanted to sell to gather interest in his idea: a set of magnetic-backed US states made out of laser cut wood that show the topography of America. AWESOME!!!

The packaging structure was inspired by the jig used to assemble each state. A piece of charcoal colored chipboard is sandwiched between layers of thick cardboard that mimic the topographic nature of the product. The front of the packaging is laser cut with the pattern of surrounding states while product information is shown on the back panel.

The product is easily nestled into its’ own shape with a small finger hole on the back to help pop it out for use. The packaging doubles as a free-standing display for the state.

To highlight each state’s unique attributes, a small pamphlet with state facts was created with images and notable geographic landmarks. The pamphlet folds in 3 each way and slides into a recessed slit on the back side of the packaging structure, making the product and packaging a fully integrated solution.

This project was in collaboration with Greg Jones from 54-40, logo design by Ashley Stevens, a designer I worked with previously while at Morrow McKenzie Design. ADX is a Portland-based community space for makers to use various large-scale equipment and resources to make their own products. ADX also hosts a variety of events and classes."

About peppersprouts

Blurring the line between computer aided design and traditional craftsmanship, peppersprouts offers a wide range of affordable and eco-friendly homegoods.

It all started in 2009 in a tiny basement apartment in Brooklyn, NY. With a background in graphic design and the urge to create something new, Jen sketched a design for a coaster that she would love to see on the shelves of her favorite shop. With the help of some awesome people she was able to have her design protyped through laser cutting. After that, the ideas just keep flowing.

By using modern manufacturing techniques, and a little elbow grease, peppersprouts is proud to offer an affordable, well designed product.

The Top Modern Wood Christmas Trees For 2009 (updated for 2011)

Last year was the year for retro and flocked trees. Bright funky colored synthetic trees or tinsel and glitter trees were a big trend in 2008. This year, the flat packed wooden tree is a great alternative. Perhaps it's because of the economy, or the increasing awareness of the state of our environment, but alternatives to live spruce, pine and evergreens for the Christmas holiday seem to be sprouting up everywhere.

Usable year after year and supposedly more eco-friendly (there's some debate about that), the following trees are nicely designed by various companies, range in style, woods and price.

Many of them are already sold out, so if you want one, better shop quickly!

The Possibilitree:

PossibiliTree® wooden trees are made in Minnesota, produced as a family business venture. Our mission is to provide you with a beautiful and unusual art piece that functions as a natural alternative to a live or artificial Christmas tree. Each possibiliTree® wooden tree is handmade and distinct with its own color and grain pattern variations.

Available in either a 2ft tabletop, 3 ft. tabletop or 6 ft suspended version. Depending upon the size, the tree comes in a a variety of woods like birch, cherry, wild cherry, walnut or butternut, and arrives flatpacked.

The 2ft tabletop:

The 3ft tabletop:

The 6ft suspended:

The story behind this tree as told by the daughter of the designer:

My father, Richard Babcock, an architect who built furniture in his spare time, came up with a simple and non-messy alternative to real Christmas trees.

Tired of finding, hauling, displaying, watering and disposing of the bulky, needle-dropping, space-guzzling evergreen every Christmas, he designed two wooden trees to use instead. Dick’s first tree, life-size at 6 feet, suspends from the ceiling with a thin wire. The second, a 3 foot tabletop version, uses a base stand for support. Dick designed both to be easy to set up, take down and store compactly.

The suspended tree is a real show-stopper, appearing to float over wrapped presents. With track lighting strategically placed, it casts surprising and beautiful shadows in a room.

The tabletop tree is the perfect size to highlight favorite holiday ornaments. It can be used throughout the year, too—decorated for such celebrations as graduations, birthdays, and other holidays. The possibilities are boundless. I enjoy displaying both trees in my home without ornaments, as art.

In 2002, the suspended tree placed as a finalist in the national Hammacher Schlemmer Search for Invention® contest. Prompted by that recognition and our long-standing affection for the trees, my family speculated that others would value them as well. We patented the design and formed a business. Inspired by the open-ended ways to display the trees, we named our company possibiliTree LLC. We produce the 6ft suspended tree and the tabletop tree—now in 2ft and 3ft versions. PossibiliTree® wooden trees are made in Minnesota. When available, we use reclaimed or “deadfall” wood. -- Pat Babcock Sorenson, Artistic Director, possibiliTree LLC
